Jack Bodell Dies at 76, European Heavyweight Champ Who Lost to Jerry Quarry
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
London, UK (November 12th, 2016)– Former British and European heavyweight champion Jack Bodell, ‘The Swadlincote Swineheard’, who got blown away in 64 seconds by Jerry Quarry in his most important ‘test’, passed away in Great Britain at age 76 on November 9, 2016, from dementia.
Bodell, a southpaw heavyweight, compiled a record of 58 wins and 13 looses, with 31 knockouts, between 1962 and 1972. He is best known for his televised loss to Jerry Quarry, then America’s white hope, on November 16, 1971, in London at Wembley.

A short Quarry right to Bodell’s face in the first minute dropped Bodell to a knee in a flash knockdown, who got immediately back up and continued the bout without the referee giving a count. A counter right by Quarry caught Bodell, taller and more aggressive, coming in. Bodell plunged to the canvas and could not beat the count. The brief bout was filmed in black and white and remains a YouTube textbook boxing class of what not to do against an established counterpuncher. Bodell came straight forward swinging away as he always does, and got lured into the classic counter overhand right hand trap by Quarry. Bodell lost his last three bouts and his British and European titles, and faded into oblivion.
Despite the picture with Muhammad Ali, Jack Bodell never got a chance to fight Ali for his world titles. When the photo was taken, Ali visited with Bodell, then retired, at his fish and chop shop in Coventry, England. Bodell’s career included wins over Muhammad Ali title challengers Brian London and Joe Bugner.
