Phoenix, Arizona (May 16, 2015)– Jose Benavidez Jr. (23-0) retained his interim WBA World super lightweight title on Friday against Jorge Paez Jr. (38-5-2) in Phoenix, Arizona. Seconds into the 12th round of the fight it ended in a knockout. Apart from the fireworks at the end of the fight, fans often booed when Benavidez would lean on the ropes and let Paez fire at will. “Leaning on the ropes was part of the plan to tire him out” said Benavidez.
Benavidez dominated in the middle of the ring where he would move and land the cleaner and more effective punches. Whether he stays at 140 or moves to 147 Benavidez will start fighting bigger, stronger fighters in his weight class where leaning on the ropes will cost him dearly.
Meanwhile Jorge Paez Jr. suffered a loss on Friday, but his father Jorge Paez Sr. ,one of Mexico’s boxing’s greats, was not there to support his son. When asked why his father wasn’t present for one the most important fights of his life he basically said his father was too busy.
Some would think that an ex boxer would support his son, instead Erik Morales another boxing great filled the spot his corner.
At the end of the day Benavidez won his 23rd fight on his 23rd birthday putting him one step closer toward being part of boxing’s most elite fighters. No doubt Benavidez has the potential of being a star but first he must put himself against the likes of Jesse Vargas, Terence Crawford, or Chris Algieri to win over any fans that may still have any doubt.
