New York, NY (January 31st, 2026)– World Boxing Council World Middleweight champion Carlos Adames, overweight at 180 pounds before his scheduled 12 rounds world title defense against Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams as the co-main event at Madison Square Garden on January 31, 2026, has been hospitalized due to dehydration while attempting weight loss, forcing cancellation of his WBC title bout. He was around 20 pounds over the limit for this fight.

Williams, 19-1 with 13 knockouts, Palm Beach, Florida, ranked ninth in the world among middleweights on BoxRec, will instead fight a 10-rounder at Madison Square Garden against a Joe DeGuardia fighter, International Boxing Federation USBA Super Welterweight champion Wendy Toussaint, 17-3 with seven knockouts, Huntington, New York, by way of Haiti. This will be the first bout at middleweight for Toussaint. Three of Toussaint’s last five opponents had a combined record of 38-0 at the time he fought them.

Adames, 24-1-1 with 18 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada, by way of the Dominican Republic, last fought to a 12 rounds draw with Hamzah Sheeraz at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February 2025. The WBC has not announced the status of whether Adames will keep his title or not. The WBC website still lists Adames vs. Williams.
