
Fonseca Upsets Oimiha and Wins WBA Gold Lightweight Title in Libya, Mike Perez Bout Ends in No Contest

Benghazi, Libya (August 8th, 2025)– From 1979 to 2011, during the political regime of the late Colonel Muammar El Al-Gaddafi, professional boxing was outlawed in Libya. In 2024, boxing returned to Libya.
An unintentional left hand at the bell ending round 4 thrown by grey bearded cruiserweight contender Mike Perez sent opponent Christian Fabian Luis rolling on the floor, then on his side, staggering back to his corner where he indicated he could not continue his bout on Friday, August 8, 2025, in Benghazi, Libya, resulting in a controversial ‘No Contest’ result.
31-3-1 with 22 knockouts, the number eight current BoxRec world-ranked cruiserweight contender in the world, a southpaw fighting out of Cork, Ireland, by way of Ciego de Avila, Cuba, landed left hooks to the body, while Luis, 12-4 with eight knockouts, General Roca, Argentina, countered with short right hooks. Luis came into Libya a winner of four of his last five bouts. Both fighters now have a ‘No Contest’ on their respective records.
In a major upset, after a hard fought war, lightweight Francisco Fonseca, 37-4-2 with 29 knockouts, Managua, Nicaragua, won the WBA Gold Lightweight title by dropped undefeated 2024 Olympic Silver medalist Sofiane Oimiha, now 6-1 with three knockouts, Toulouse, France, in the third round, landing right hands throughout en route to a 10 round decision upset. Fonseca won 95-94, 95-94, 97-92 on the scorecards. One round decided it.

Josue Francisco Aguero Won in 10 rounds over Diego Ortiz Aleman, super featherweights. Aguero, a prospect from Catamarca, Argentina, goes to 14-0 with seven knockouts. Aleman, 20-4-1 with 14 knockouts, Playas de Rosarito, Mexico, had won eight straight bouts coming into this bout, which opened the Benghazi card.
In a battle of undefeated featherweight prospects for the interim WBA Featherweight world title, and in a WBA world title eliminator bout, Mirco Cuello, 16-0 with 13 knockouts, Santa Fe, Argentina, stopped Sergio Rios Jimenez, 19-12 with seven knockouts, San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, in the second round. After Cuello dropped Jimenez once in the first round, and twice in the second round, referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. waved off the mismatch.
In the main event, undefeated southpaw light heavyweight prospect Alberto Ramirez, 22-0 with 19 knockouts, El Vigia, Venezuela, stopped Jerome Pampellone, 19-3 with 12 knockouts, Auckland, New Zealand, at 1:19 of the seventh round. Ramirez dropped Pampellone once in the sixth round, and twice in the seventh round, before referee Janny Guzman waved the bout off.
