Hermans Drops Spencer to Win IBO Title in Upset, Makhmudov Wins in One Round

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Shawinigan, Canada (December 17th, 2022)– The career of former World Boxing Organization Female World Super Middleweight champion Femke Hermans appeared to be over in April 2022 when she was knocked out by Savannah Marshall in the third round of a WBO World Female Middleweight title bout. Hermans, the current EBU European Female Middleweight champion with 102 rounds boxed and five world title bouts, scored an upset at Centre Gervais Auto, Shawinigan, Canada, on Friday night, December 16, 2022, by decking undefeated Mary Spencer en route to a ten round unanimous decision for the vacant International Boxing Organisation Female World Super Welterweight title on the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ boxing card on ESPN.

Hermans, age 32, 14-5 with five knockouts, Londerzeel, Belgium, decked Spencer in the second round, on the way to winning rounds two, three, four, five, six and seven and the bout on the Real Combat Media scorecard. Hermans also had an impressive round nine, using superior head movement and foot movement to slip punches and avoid the straight line overhyped Spencer’s awkward punch attempts.

Spencer, age 38, 7-1 with five knockouts, Montreal, Canada, who holds the WBA International and WBC Silver Super Welterweight titles, talked a great game, but made a major mistake in taking Hermans as the titular opponent. Hermans had dropped her weight to the super welterweight 154 pounds weight limit, where she was going to be far more powerful. Hermans confidently came forward and took control of the bout, landing power shots and carefully placed counter power shots. Spencer’s supposed power was nonexistent against a higher-weight world champion moving down in weight class, a true rarity.

Result: Femke Hermans Win 10 Mary Spencer, Female Super Welterweights

In a final bout stinker televised by ESPN, 16-0 undefeated Russian heavyweight prospect Arslanbek Makhmudov scored a stoppage after three minutes of 23-7 pretender Michael Wallisch of Munich, Germany, in a bout in which WEallisch did not land a single punch in the first round! Makhmudov dropped Wallisch twice, but lost a point for hitting behind the head. Wallisch quit on his stool. This was the worst televised heavyweight bout of 2022.
