UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida Preview

By MMA Writer: Michael Alexander

The UFC makes their way back to New Jersey for another FX event, bringing with them a Light Weight main event sure to bring down the house. Both Gray “The Bully” Maynard (10-1-1, 1NC) and Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (29-12) are looking to bounce back from losses and put their respective names back into the title talks.

Gray Maynard has not had it easy for the longest time in his MMA career. The then undefeated LW contender sees Frankie Edgar, a man he beat handily, win the LW championship title. Then when Maynard gets his first shot at the belt, he couldn’t put Edgar away and ended up receiving a draw for his efforts. The second go round, Edgar ended up knocking out Maynard to secure his spot as the best LW in the world. With all of that said, Maynard is hungrier now more then ever and is willing to do whatever it takes to earn another shot at the belt.

Clay Guida has had more #1 contender matches and Fight of the Night awards then almost every other fighter in the UFC. While always on the cusp of a championship bout, he always falters. His last fight was against future champ, Benson Henderson. In another brilliant back and forth battle, Henderson was able to control all aspects of the fight and got his shot at the belt. Now Guida looks to prove that he is still relevant in the LW division by taking out Maynard.

Prediction:

Maynard is a force to be reckoned with in the LW division, but he is going to have a hard time with Guida. Guida pushes harder then any other fighter in the UFC, so Maynard will be working at all times. Plus, this will be a five round fight so it’s going to be even more difficult for Maynard as he has a history of slowing down and gassing in later rounds. With that said, I believe Maynard will be too strong and too big for Guida to handle and will end up winning by unanimous decision.
