IBF British Delight! How Bout Bernard Hopkins versus George Groves?
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
British sports fans love soccer, foot, boxing, contact sports, the more physical the better, you name it. While all the hype of late in Great Britain has centered around David Haye, David Price, Tyson Fury and others.
Perhaps the one name mentioned the least should be considered the most. That name is light heavyweight contender George Groves. Now 18-0, with 14 knockouts, Groves has fought all but two bouts in the United Kingdom. He has also fought and won in Germany and Las Vegas, Nevada. What about in 2013 George Groves versus Bernard B-Hop Hopkins at Barclay Center Brooklyn or Wembley Arena or O2 Millenium Arena in London?
Now ranked sixth in the world on BoxRec as a super middleweight, Groves’ precise fight weight range is from 167 1/4 to 171 1/4 pounds, which teeter totters the border between the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Groves appeared to win every round in his Commonwealth British Empire 12 round victory over Glen ‘The Road Warrior’ Johnson in December 2012.
The British like a sensational fight, and the young Groves, who is 25 years old and has accurate fast hands and applies pressure well, could give aging 48 year old International Boxing Federation champion Hopkins trouble. The British want to put together a card extravaganza? The young Groves versus Hopkins might be just the thing. Groves is wee a bit heavier and stronger than the Carl Froch super middleweight division.
George Groves versus Bernard Hopkins later in 2013 would be a fine matchup at 12 rounds for any belt. As Bernard Hopkins ‘The Executioner’ would say, show me the money. The British should make it happen. George Groves is exactly the sort of opponent Bernard Hopkins would like to challenge him if he gets by 25-1 Armenian challenger Karo Murat at Barclay Center Brooklyn on July 13, 2013.
George Groves is back in action in May 25, 2013, in a 12 round bout at O2 Arena in London against 30-2 Noe Gonzalez Alba. Carl Foch will defend his IBF and WBA Super World super Middleweight titles in a rematch against Mikkel Kessler, and British light heavyweight squares off in a WBC Silver Light Heavyweight title rematch and eliminator against Isaac Chilemba, in other significant bouts on the same card.
