Mathews Lives

Cruiserweight Case of Julio Cesar Mathews

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (February 15, 2013)–A sparring partner of Steve Cunningham, Hasim Rahman, Eddie Chambers, Bert Cooper, and Rob Calloway among others, southpaw cruiserweight Julio Mathews is a strange cruiserweight case. In and out of prison, Mathews professional boxing career was put on hold after he was shot in the leg in a random drive by. He lost 11 years of his career from 1997 to 2008.

At 38, Mathews health had recovered well enough to return to the ring and have a second ‘Christmas’ so to speak. His victims in his comeback included Kevin Hood (KO3), Joshua Harris (KO1), Chris Stallworth (KO1), William Bailey (KO3), Kamarah Pasley (Win 6), Harvey Jolly (Win 6), and Garrett Wilson (knocked down Wilson in the first, Win 6).

Fate would be cruel to Julio Cesar Mathews because of his age. Boxing 360 CEO Dr. Mario Yagobi met Mathews, but strangely decided to sign his first round knockout vicitm Joshua Harris instead, evidently because another fighter had convinced him to do it because Harris had beaten a 9-1 heavyweight. But the 9-1 heavyweight’s record was padded, and Mathews victim Harris lost three more times instead.

Pennsylvania promoter Russell Peltz told me Mathews was too old. Mathews then knocked down and defeated Garrett Wilson, only to watch Peltz sign Wilson instead and maneuver Wilson into the USBA cruiserweight title.

While it is true Mathews will spend in all probability spend the next decade behind bars for problems with the law, Mathews troubles came out of financial desperation because he need a promoter to get him sponsorship. Boxing, the very outlet which took Mathews off the street, kept him out of trouble and gave him a purpose, instead caused Mathews to get in trouble with the law, which was what professional boxing was supposed to save him from.

Mathews would have gone the distance against Marco Juck, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Antonio Tarver, Danny Green, Denis Lebedev, Kristof Wladarczyk, you name it. He would have beaten all of them. Poor Matthews lost to the sport of boxing himself.

Older? Yes. Beaten? Nope, not Mathews.

Whenever Mathews does get released from prison, I am sure he will climb back into the ring no matter where, Iowa, Idaho, anywhere he can get a license. He’ll always be the champion in my book.
