Nonito Donaire set to return in November vs. Vic Darchinyan

By Eliezer Garcia, Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (September 1, 2013)– The Filipino Flash, Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KOs) will be making his return to the ring, after being out class by Guillermo Rigondeaux earlier this year. The fight became one of this year’s biggest upsets, as Donaire went in as a huge favorite. Instead of a rematch with the skillful Rigondeaux, Donaire will be giving a rematch to Vic Darchinyan (39,5-1,28 KOs) in a schedule 10 round bout at featherweight on November 9th . The fight will be televised by HBO.

Darchinyan, who when last fought Donaire suffered a KO in the fith round back in 2007. Darchinyan is peaking 40 and was easily beaten in 2 out of his last 3 fights. Darchinyan is not the same fighter he was back in 2007, a rematch six years later also doesn’t make any sense. The fight favors Donaire in every way possible, as for Darchinyan puts him in a great disadvantage. At this point it really is hard to see where Top Rank wants to go with Donaire’s career.

Dan Rafael of ESPN reported that the Donaire – Darchinyan fight is set for November and will likely be taking place in Corpus Christi. Top Rank plans on having Mexican American Mikey Garcia facing WBO super featherweight champion Roman Martines in the main event card.  Also on the card will be junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan vs Demetrius Andrade.

Donaire’s Manager Cameron Dunken told ESPN “Darchinyan is an awkward guy and he can punch. He’s a dangerous guy and he really wants revenge. You never take a guy like this lightly. Anything can happen in this business.  Time will only tell what to expect from this bout. There is a lack of interest in this bout by many fight fans. Boxing is sport where the best fight the best. No bout should guarantee and easy win for both corners.
