Iceman John Scully LandShark Interview with Real Combat Media

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent

Atlantic City, NJ (June 3rd, 2013)– In an exclusive interview with Real Combat Media at Jimmy Buffett’s brand new LandShark Bar & Grill on the beach boardwalk across from Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Sunday, June 2, 2013, boxing trainer Iceman John Scully announced his pending gym and family move from Connecticut to Florida,  noting his pupil ex-champ light heavyweight Chad Dawson was not in contact with him, and would not be accompanying Scully and family in their move to Florida.

Scully, 45, was in Atlantic City at Resorts Hotel to be honored at an annual boxing dinner. John fought between 160 and 193 1/2 pounds from 1988 to 2001, with a pro record of 38-11 with 21 knockouts. His last ring appearance was an eight round decision win over Cleveland Nelson at Hershey Centre in Ontario, Canada, in June 2001. A former USA New England and World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Super Middleweight champion, Scully was unsuccessful in his attempts to win the International Boxing Federation World Light Heavyweight title from 29-0 Henry Maske of Germany (Lose 12 in Germany) and International Boxing Organization World Light Heavyweight title from Drake Thadzi in Boston (TKO by 7).

A member of the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame, Iceman John Scully is married to his wife Rita and has four children. In his prime, Scully also fought such big names as Billy Bridges, Ernest M-16 Mateen (twice), Michael Nunn, Graciano Rocciani, Tony Thornton, Tim Littles and Brett Lally.

Real Combat Media: “What happened to your training of Chad Dawson?”

John Scully: “I left Chad. When I trained him well earlier, I trained him for the two fights with Bernard Hopkins (A win changed to a no contest, and a win).”

Real Combat Media: “Where did your relationship with Chad Dawson go wrong?”

John Scully: “In my opinion, he changed. He started telling me when he was going to train, and when he wasn’t going to train, when he was going to do this, and when he was going to do that. We were training in Las   Vegas at a private gym. I didn’t like the way the training camp was going. I didn’t like the way Chad was acting, so I made up my mind after the Andre Ward fight I was going to leave. I went home, and that was it. We (Chad and I) never spoke (after the bout).”

Real Combat Media: “What were the issues regarding Chad’s preparations?”

John Scully: “Chad had issues making weight (168 pounds super middleweight limit). That was not (because of) me. Chad had a strength and conditioning coach to make the weight. I told the coach he was doing it all wrong, and he told me to mind my own business. At the start of the fight camp, Chad weighed 182 pounds. Five weeks later, Chad weighed 184 pounds. The night before the weigh-in, Chad weighed 175 pounds. Chad had to lose seven pounds two nights before the fight. That had nothing to do with me. Chad was mad at me after the fight, as I was using his weight issues as an excuse for why he lost. Chad did not see his loss to Ward as being caused by his weight issues but I did. It was all wrong.”

Real Combat Media: “Are you still close to Chad, training camps aside?”

John Scully: “We were never that close. Chad is still a good fighter. My main concern is how the weight loss will affect him like it did Roy Jones Jr. It affects you permanently, like the weight loss affected Roy after his heavyweight title fight win over John Ruiz. It could affect Chad. Who knows?”

Real Combat Media: “While Real Combat Media was covering a Peltz Promotions boxing card at Bally’s, you were honored at a boxing gala at Resorts. Who came?”

John Scully: “Those in attendance at the Atlantic City boxing gala included many champions and contenders, including: Charles Brewer, William Joppy, Junior Jones, Calvin Grove, Beau James, ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon, Nate Miller, Buster Drayton, Vinnie Burgese, William Guthrie, Bobby Czyz, Ivan Robinson, Cory Spinks, DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley, Chuck Wepner, Jack Callen, Jameel McCline, Marlon Starling that I remember seeing, and many more.”

Real Combat Media: “Your Connecticut gym in Middletown,  The Lion’s Den, was recently closed down. Seems like Iceman  and his fighters wound up in ‘the lion’s den’. What happened to your gym?”

John Scully: “The owner, Doug Carteli, got convicted on income tax evasion. I worked for him in his boxing gym. The IRS closed the gym a month ago. I had a boxing gym full of amateurs and a couple of pros I was training.”

Real Combat Media: “Where are you training your fighters now? Who are the names we should look to hear more about soon?”

John Scully: ” A friend of mine has a gym in Meriden, Connecticut. Those I am training include: Javier Flores, a 9-0 southpaw welterweight; George Foreman III, son of the great heavyweight champion; and light heavyweight area Golden Gloves champion Jarin Clay Bey, son of former heavyweight contender Lawrence Clay Bey. Jarin is working his way up.”

Real Combat Media: “What happened to the Gerald McClellan benefit you had planned for Connecticut?”

John Scully: “I’m working on doing a show in Florida to raise money for Gerald’s sister Lisa, who has been taking care of him and does amazing stuff for Gerald. I’m going to talk to the Hard Rock Casino people in Florida about doing something for Gerald. I’m going to coordinate it with them when I talk to them in July.”

Real Combat Media: “Where are you moving to in Florida? What is your plan?”

John Scully: “I am moving to Ocoee, Florida, near my wife’s family.  I have a friend of mine who has a gym in Kissimmee, Florida. I’ll work out of there until I get (build) my own gym. I’ll keep in touch with Real Combat Media, keeping you posted on new developments after my move, my new gym and my plans as they develop.”
