The Cobra Beats Viking Warrior in London Rematch. Andre Ward Rematch Next?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent

London, UK (May 26th, 2013)– From a neutral standpoint, the critical difference in the 12 round world title super middleweight rematch of Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch and Mikkel ‘The Viking Warrior’ Kessler boiled down to one simple advantage: where it was fought: London’s O2 Arena. Froch is, however, one determined dude, and a ‘bad’ dude at that.

Scores aside, the hard fought thriller is over, with Froch, the BocRec’s number two super middleweight fighter, getting the unanimous decision in Arena on May 25, 2013, which he did not get in MCH Messecenter Herning, in Herning, Denmark, in April 24, 2010, two years ago. Left-right combinations, jabs and hooks by Froch dominated the tempo of this bout, marked by numerous furious exchanges. Kessler, the BoxRec number four fighter, landed some good overhand power shots and had a few good rounds, enough to keep the crowd guessing who would make it to the final bell. Actually, both fighters did, but it was a brutal seesaw road not indicated by the scoring.

Kessler may have won the fourth, fifth, ninth and eleventh rounds with superior work as the battle went back and forth. The key to Froch’s  success was, of course, his superior work rate, enabling him to win seven of the first 11 rounds. Froch cut off the ring and hunted down a weary Kessler in the twelfth round, forcing Kessler to hang on as Froch iced the victory, and made his case for a rematch with Andre Ward.

Ward, now 26-0, 14 knockouts, Oakland, California, has inferred he will not leave the United States to rematch with Froch, and Ward, the WBA and WBC Super Middleweight World champion and BoxRec number one, might only be convinced if the British put enough money on the table to make the rematch happen. Of Ward’s 26 bouts, he had fought off the mainland twice, in Saint Lucia in 2007, and the Cayman Islands in 2008, but not in the past five years.

Froch wanted this rematch win bad. The punches landed proved it. Froch landed 272 punches of 998 punches thrown overall, a 27% scoring ratio. Kessler landed 178 of 567 punches, a 31% landing ratio. Froch had 95 more punches. Froch landed 242 head punches to Kessler’s 139, a tidal wave. Kessler landed more body shots than Froch, 39 to Froch’s 30.

Froch, now 31-2, 22 knockouts, Nottingham, England, and Kessler, now 46-3, 25 knockouts, Copenhagen, Denmark, were fighting for more than just Froch’s International Boxing Federation and Kessler’s World Boxing Association World super Middleweight titles. It was pride of country, and reputation in the division, and gentlemen, maybe we should do a third rubber match.
